Our Aims
Decolonise QMUL is a political and campaigning society founded in 2017. We are concerned with the patterns surrounding the academic attainment, retention and success of students belonging to minority groups, as well as the rates at which they drop out and experience mental illness in comparison to their peers. Our long term aims are as follows;
1. Unite peoples of marginalised groups of all kinds (gender/ ethnicity/ religion/ disability/ sexuality) and create a sense of community for those that may feel alienated in everyday activities due to their allegiance to said groups
2. Alleviate structural inequalities at the university (through lobbying and discussion) that are currently resulting in lower attainment, retention and success within the marginalised groups afore mentioned
3. Ensure the intellectual development of all students in regards to the experiences of marginalised groups traditionally absent from higher education, both academically and socially.
Our Actions
Engagement with you is an important goal of the society - opportunities to feedback and share your experiences will range from anonymous surveys to safe spaces and long table discussions with staff
Second of all, we think it is vital to educate. We have all heard of the terms diversity and inclusion, but oftentimes the significance of representation and inclusion goes undiscussed and ignored. Diversity isn’t just about meeting quotas; it’s essential that people understand the importance of having lecturers and tutors that are ethnic minorities; members of the LGBTQ community; or who otherwise reflect the students they teach.
Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, we will be holding events throughout the year, where you can come and socialise with other members of the society. We want our society to be at least one place where members can be comfortable and unapologetically themselves, to perhaps discuss things they wouldn’t discuss outside of our community but also just to chill, relax and enjoy themselves.

Through bringing together marginalised groups of all kinds and standing in solidarity to build a community of support and ‘decolonising’ the establishment to truly reflect the highly diverse student body at QMUL. By establishing a truly decolonised university we will dispel the notion of universal knowledge; all knowledge is bound to the subjective experience of individuals.
